Nissan Europe Announces Plans to Tweak the LEAF
The Nissan LEAF has been such a success here in the States, that Nissan recently opened ordering up to every state in the country. This is the first EV to go on sale nationwide, and it's already won tons of awards and recognition for its efficiency and its stylish design. It's a bit of a different story overseas, however, and Nissan has plans to tweak it a bit for European drivers.
Nissan Europe's VP of Engineering, Colin Lawther, explains to Automotive News that the plan is to "Fine-tune a car for the European customer from a design point of view."1 That is to say, while European drivers aren't currently the world's biggest fans of the design of the LEAF, we'd venture a guess that they will be very soon. This will be made even easier by the fact that production will move to the UK, which will drop the purchase price and make buying a LEAF even easier.
American drivers will enjoy similar benefits of moving production closer to home. Nissan has plans to begin producing the LEAF in their Smyrna, Tennessee plant soon. Up until this year, the LEAF has only been built in Nissan's Oppama, Japan plant. From there, it's shipped around the world. When it comes to import fees and other taxes, this can add up to quite a bit in some places. For UK drivers, this move will save a lot of money.
This means that by this time next year, European drivers will be paying less for a car that they'll love even more. It's a win-win!
