Nissan Shares Details on Fourth EV
After the successful debut of the Nissan LEAF, the automaker announced plans to expand their EV offerings with three other models. In addition to the LEAF, Nissan is looking to create an electric van or taxi, a sedan for their luxury arm, and they left one spot open for debate.
So far, Nissan has presented three viable options, starting with their Esflow two-door sports car concept. The next viable option, a city car that would fit somewhere between a Smart car and a Versa, the Pivo 3 is a three-seater with wheel-mounted batteries. And while it's a concept that has been received well, it seems Nissan is looking for something that would appeal to a wider audience.
That leaves them with their electric crossover, the Townpod EV concept. Officials seem to think this is the most likely choice. Mostly because of the popularity of the crossover in the U.S., the abundant cargo space and efficiency would win over buyers.
This is entirely speculation, of course. The only things we know for sure are the details confirmed by Andy Palmer, Nissan Motors Executive VP for Vehicle Planning and Program Management. He says, "It will be a city car. It will be in the A/B segment. That car would have to be low-cost. It would be a vehicle where you could potentially accept less range, so you could have a smaller battery. And that would bring the price down."1 They've also said that the fourth EV in the Nissan lineup will likely be destined for a global market.
